GALLERY 1: LOONS
The Common Loon is the Minnesota State bird and in general an icon representing the solitude of the northern woods and lakes. I have had the good fortune to spend hours with common loons and on one lake in particular they will approach my boat when it is launched. The parents on this lake seem to have developed a trust for my presence and will often leave their chick next to my boat while they dive for fish. The experience is exhilarating and the common loon is one of my favorite avian species to photograph.
