GALLERY 164: GREAT GRAY OWL
The winter of 2004-2005 in Minnesota was marked by a huge influx of Great Gray Owls into the northern woods, down from Canada. The number of owls visiting for the winter varies from year to year, largely dependent on food resources (voles) in adjacent provinces of Canada. A near complete crash in the vole numbers in Canada during the summer of 2004 forced record numbers of Great Gray Owls (estimated 2000 individuals) to northern Minnesota. The winter of 2004-2005 was an exciting season for nature lovers, photographers and birders alike!
