GALLERY 184: WESTERN GREBES
Western Grebes can be photographed on the lakes in Minneapolis during the spring migration but are best observed on their nesting lakes 150 miles west of the metropolitan area.
The first two photographs on this page were made in 2003 with my very first digital camera. During the summer of 2015, I decided to get the photography boat out of the shed, evict the mice, tune up the motor, charge the battery and revisit this subject. Following the first two photographs from 2003, are thirty photographs from the 2015 season. I was not completely finished with my project but my truck with my photo gear was stolen out of the parking lot at work and the project came to an abrupt end. One of the goals of this project was to capture images of chicks riding on the back of the parents and feeding behavior. I had read the parents offer a feather to the chicks during the first days of life as an intial meal, to prime the digestive system. I wanted to confirm and capture this behavior.
