GALLERY 195: POLAR BEARS (2007)
Churchill, Manitoba is the self proclaimed Polar Bear capital of the world. Counterclockwise currents in the Hudson Bay coupled with unique local geography here causes the first ice on Hudson Bay to predictably form near the town of Churchill every year. The ice leaves the Bay in July, forcing the Polar Bears onto the tundra for a four month rest and fast. Bears congregate in this area in late October because as soon as the ice forms Bears can resume hunting and feeding on seals. These pictures are from my second trip to Churchill, November 2007.
