GALLERY 206: Trumpeter Swans
The 2014 Trumpeter Swan season was cut short due to two developments. One very cold January morning, walking out to set up for photography, I broke through the ice and went into the river to my knees. I had my big lens and camera on my tripod over my shoulder and fortunately I did not loose my balance and remained upright but my D4 camera and 40-800 zoom went into the river. It was minus 17F that morning and the camera and lens were instantly covered in an inch of ice as I made my way back out onto safe ice. I knew that I would have to get to the truck and get warmed up. Both of my boots had filled with water. I got back into the truck and got my boots and socks off and heated up the truck to get warm and made it home with no significant injury. The D4 went into a bag of rice and amazingly suffered no problems due to excellent weather sealing and probably the fact that it was splashed but not fully submerged. The 80-400 went to Nikon for a couple of months and although functional, it is not 100% correct. After any event like this, you have to wonder wouldn't it be nice to just sleep in on the weekends, have a cup of coffee and read the paper? I guess it was a good thing since this event made me look for different subject material, and I spent the rest of the winter working on Snowy Owl images. Because I have an extensive collection of winter Swan pictures, I edited this gallery to include a few iconic images. I am trying to make photographs that are more scenery-esque with Swans smaller in the frame and two such photographs are included. The winter of 2015 is starting out cold so it is likely I will be able to spend more mornings watching the sunrise come up with Trumpeter Swans.
